An appointment at Ideal Option is just like visiting a doctor's office. You will check in, get your vital signs taken, submit a urine sample for lab testing, then see a provider one-on-one. Your provider will discuss your use history and recommend a treatment plan with medications that will help you manage withdrawal at home and stay in recovery for the long-term.

After the first visit, patients are seen the following day in person or remotely for a check-in, then again in the clinic within a few days. As the patient stabilizes on their prescribed medication, appointments are scheduled weekly, then once every two weeks, then once a month, as determined by the provider based on lab testing results.

At Ideal Option, we follow a harm-reduction model. This means that we are focused on helping the patient achieve complete abstinence from the most harmful substance the patient is using first. If the patient wishes to continue using other less harmful substances, we will provide counsel and adjust medications as needed, but there are no penalties for positive test results.

All current patients that have been seen at least once in person are eligible for a virtual/remote visit; however, it is up to the provider to determine whether the patient will be prescribed medication via a virtual/remote visit. We prefer all patients to be seen in the clinic for their first three visits in order to complete lab testing, after which virtual/remote visits can be arranged on an as-needed basis.

No, if possible, it’s preferable not to be in withdrawal for your first appointment. Your provider will recommend a treatment plan and medication dosing protocol based on your current usage to ensure you are prepared to safely and comfortably manage your withdrawal at home. For conventional initiation, you do need to be off opioids for 24-36 hours before starting buprenorphine to prevent precipitated withdrawal. Your provider will speak with you about these time frames. If you are unable to abstain from opioids for that long, your provider will speak with you about alternative dosing protocols for transitioning comfortably to buprenorphine.

The length of treatment is dependent on your unique situation and history of substance use. While some of our patients can taper off their medication relatively quickly and maintain a stable long-term recovery, others find they need to stay on medication for several months or even years.

Yes, established patients can be seen together and scheduled as side-by-side appointments. New patient visits do take longer however, so back-to-back appointments will need to be made
